Kilmeena V Ballinrobe U21 B C/Ship Group 3

Kilmeena progressed to the quarter finals following this ding dong battle with the men from South Mayo. In what proved to be a very tight game throughout, both teams slogged it out for the right to progress to the quarter finals. Victory would see one team progressing while defeat would leave things in the balance. As it transpired the draw saw the boys in black and white topping the group while it consigned Ballinrobe to an early exit from the competition.
The game started slow and both teams exchanged points with Joey Smyth on target for Kilmeena. However within the next five minutes Ballinrobe tagged on four successive points with their inside forwards causing serious damage to leave them well in command at the end of the first quarter.
However, not for the first time Kilmeena fought there way back into the game and after a flowing move involving four or five players Joey Smyth rounded the keeper and slotted the ball to the net. Then Ballinrobe and Johnny McGlynn swapped points before a Ballinrobe raid upfield ended with the ball being fired to the net.
However, in what was now a helter skelter game, Kilmeena replied instantly by raising the green flag at the opposite end. That man, McGlynn, was on hand again with his trademark cool finish to another superb move. the half ended with Johnny McGlynn on target again with a point from play to level up the scores
Half time; Kilmeena 2 - 3 Ballinrobe 1 - 6
The home lads started brightly in the second half and after ten minutes, they were two in front with points from Smyth and Sean Ryder. Ballinrobe came roaring back and within five minutes were back in front having slotted over three unanswered points. Sean Ryder and Chris Heanue scored points either side of a Ballinrobe point and going into the last ten minutes the sides were level in what was now a titanic struggle. The question now was in tough underfoot conditions, who were going to be the team with the bottle to see it through.
Ballinrobe seemed to have provided the answer when their full forward soloed through the home defence to score what threatened to be the decisive goal. Sean Ryder clawed one back but Ballinrobe replied immediately to maintain their advantage as the minutes ticked away. Incredibly Kilmeena dug in and in five minutes had edged in front. Three frees from Johnny McGlynn, a terrific score on the run from Paul Moran had edged the home lot in front deep into injury time. However, Ballinrobe snatched the equaliser right at the death and to be fair it was a result they deserved in a game in which both teams gave everything.
This was a resounding performance form the Kilmeena lads again, and there is a resilience and toughness to this team which belies their youth. A quarter final now awaits next weekend and what is certain is that this team will give everything they have again.
Best for kilmeena: Niall Feehan, Conor Madden, Sean Ryder and Keith Joyce
Scorers: Johnny McGlynn 1 - 6(5f), Joey Smyth 1 - 1, Sean Ryder 0 - 3, Chris Heanue 0 - 1, Paul Moran 0 - 1

Kilmeena ran out easy winners in what proved to be a fairly tame contest. We went into this game expecting a tough encounter from the men from North Mayo, but the expected battle never materialised.
In the early moments, Kilmeena were dominating possession but only had a Chris Heanue point to show after five minutes of sustained pressure. The next five were to prove much more productive with a point from John Ryan, and a goal from a Chris Heanue 45 and then after a flowing move down the left Kevin Ryder ghosted in at the back post to score a fine goal. There followed another point from Joey Smyth before the visitors raised their first white flag at the end of the first quarter
Another fine finish to the net from Keith Joyce was sandwiched between two Johnny McGlynn points, and the Kilmeena lads were very much in the driving seat. At this stage of the game the Kilmeena defence was well on top with Alex O'Riain, Ross Mullen and John Ryan winning their individual battles. Conor Madden was putting in his usual combative display in midfield. The last ten minutes saw points from Seanie Ryder, Chris Heanue, Joey Smyth and Keith Joyce to leave the half time score;
Kilmeena 3 - 12 Ardnaree 0 - 1.
Playing with the strong breeze at their backs Ardnaree were determined to try and make a game of the second half. In the first ten minutes they rattled off three points. However, yet another pulsating move from defence saw Johnny mcGlynn on the final pass to deliver the ball to the net with all the composure of a player of more advanced years. Seanie Ryder and Aaron Mcginley followed up with fine scores from distance, only for Ardnaree to get some compensation with a goal to the roof of the net.
Entering the final quarter Kilmeena once again took the game to their opponents and after Keith Joyce swapped points with another Ardnaree score, Joey smyth combined well with McGlynn to fist the ball to the net. Ardnaree came back with another two points but the game ended with a final flurry of Kilmeena points from Ryan Mcgonagle, Niall feehan, McGlynn and Seanie Ryder.
This was an excellent victory with some fine play from the Kilmeena lads. The quality of passing and handling was excellent and when not in possession the work rate and tackling was of the highest order. In games like this it is very hard to single out individual displays but, Stephen Staunton, Keith Joyce, Niall Feehan and Sean Ryder were the pick of so many outstanding displays. Andrew Grealis in goal was excellent in his kickouts with Paul Moran coming off the bench to put in a good second half shift.
Scorers: Johnny McGlynn 1 - 4(1f), Chris Heanue 1 - 3(1 - 1f), Keith Joyce 1 - 2, Joey Smyth 1 - 2, Sean Ryder 0 - 4, Kevin Ryder 1 - 0, John Ryan 0 - 1, Aaron McGinley
0 - 1, Ryan McGonagle 0 - 1, Niall Feehan 0 - 1.

Kilmeena 3-9 Ballintubber 1-12

Kilmeena storm to opening day victory

Kilmeena travelled to this opening fixture more in hope than expectation against a fancied Ballintubber outfit, and minus a number of senior players who were ruled out through injury and holidays. However, what unfolded was a display of sheer bloody mindedness that belied the youth and inexperience of the 15 players who togged out on the day.

From the throw in, Kilmeena were immediately under pressure and within three minutes, we were down by a goal and a point. The signs looked ominous, but two Johnny McGlynn frees steadied the ship. Ballintubber stretched the margin out to three again, but then a driving move through the middle ended with John Ryan rounding the keeper and tucking the ball into the net. Incredibly the boys in black and white were one point ahead after another score from Mcglynn at the end of the first quarter. But then Ballintubber stepped on the gas, and in the next quarter they slotted over six points, with the only response being a Johnny McGlynn free at the end of the half

half time Kilmeena 1-4 Ballintubber 1-8

Despite being four points down at the short whistle, the boys knew that this game was there for the taking and on the restart set about dismantling Ballintubbers confidence. A steady start saw another McGlynn free cancelled out by a Ballintubber point, and then the fun and games began. Johnny McGlynn slotted over a fine composed score followed very quickly by a Niall Feehan point, and then a minute later in a move which carved opened up the home defence Ryan McGonagle slotted to the net, and this was quickly followed by an outrageous free from distance from Chris Heanue. In the space of five minutes, Kilmeena had gone from four points down to two points up. There followed a period of Ballintubber pressure where Andrew Grealis in goals pulled off two outstanding saves, and then defying all the odds Kilmeena swept upfield and after excellent work from Keith Joyce, Alex O'Riain found the bottom corner. With ten minutes left, it was now very much a case of the walking wounded having to soldier on in a tough uncompromising battle, and battle on they did. Going into the last five minutes, Ballintubber reduced the margin to three. They were now driving on looking for the equalising goal, but the best they could muster was a point from a placed ball. There was more left in this battling Kilmeena team, and they built again from the back for Bailey Nevin to point from distance at the final whistle.

This was one of those games that goes down as a great one to win, and a bad one to lose. The sheer will to win was evident in a team that had no respect for the reputation of their opponents, and in their leaders they had individuals who were determined to ensure there was only one outcome to the game.

Best for Kilmeena were Niall Feehan, Andrew Grealis, Conor Madden, Chris Heanue

Scorers Johnny McGlynn 0-6(4f), John Ryan 1-0, Ryan McGonagle 1-0, Alex O'Riain 1-0, Niall Feehan 0-1, Chris Heanue 0-1(1f), Bailey Nevin 0-1

The lads from Kilmeena made the trip north to Ballina to take on their Junior team in a game that could seal their promotion to Division 3
On a calm and almost balmy afternoon, the game started with both teams exchanging early scores. Kilmeena were very much on top but too much possession was being given up and opportunities missed. However, as the first quarter came to an end the Kilmeena boys got into the groove, and points started to sail over the bar as a succession of points opened up an 8 point gap. However, as the half came to a close Ballina went on a raid upfield from a kickout and a cross from the left ended up with the ball being fisted to the back of the net.
Half time Kilmeena 0 - 11, Ballina B 1 - 3
The second half started with Kilmeena coming under serious pressure, and a game that looked comfortable before half time, was now very much in the mix as the home lot tagged on two early points. Kilmeena pulled away and scored two points of their own to open up a 5 point gap again, and then a fine flowing move ended with Joey Smyth on hand to apply a cool finish to the net. A further point and Kilmeena were well ahead entering the final quarter.
With the addition of some seasoned campaigners to their ranks Ballina came roaring back. A well worked goal gave them some hope, but Kilmeena responded with a point straight away, but then in the next move they opened up our defence again to gain a penalty which was duly converted, and then another long ball resulted in another goal. The game at this stage going into the last few minutes was loose and open. Kilmeena responded with another point and Ballina came back for a score again.
In the end Kilmeena managed to keep enough composure to see the game out in what could have been game that may have seen defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. However, the two points were secured and more importantly what is now barring a strange sequence of results promotion to the next tier for next season.
The Kilmeena lads played some excellent football with some excellent moves ending in fine scores. Some of the build up play and running was excellent. However, some of our defensive work left a lot to be desired, but enough was done in the end to secure the much needed victory.
Best for Kilmeena were Darragh Keaveney, Niall Ryan, and Sean Ryder
Scorers D Keaveney 0 - 6, N Ryan 0 - 4, J Smyth 1 - 1, S Ryder 0 - 2, L Heanue 0 - 1, N Duffy 0 - 1, A Ryan 0 - 1, P Groden 0 - 1, J Reilly 0 - 1.

Kilmeena 4 - 13 2 - 7 Knockmore B

Kilmeena and Knockmore met on Sunday in a vital top of the table clash. Again the game was played in stormy conditions, and after the toss, Kilmeena were faced with the prospect of playing into a strong wind.

The game started well for Kilmeena with the defence absorbing early knockmore pressure. then a lucky break from a Kilmeena defensive lapse presented Knockmore with an early goal which was followed by a white flag.

Kilmeena were finding it difficult to launch attacks, but after settling down, they enjoyed a very positive spell when we put the visitors under sustained pressure. Joey Smyth converted a penalty, Darragh Keaveney tapped over two fine frees, and Alan Ryan completed a fine finish after a good incisive move.

In this spell, the Kilmeena lads played some excellent football. the range of passing, support play and off loads were out of the top drawer. When in possession, the Knockmore men were hounded continuously and put under serious pressure.

The half ended with Knockmore using the breeze to their advantage and tagging on four points to leave the sides level at half time.

Kilmeena 2 - 2 Knockmore 1 - 5

The second half started with Knockmore exerting a more physical influence on the game. In the first few minutes it was evident that nothing was going to come easy with the breeze with both teams bedding down for what seemed like a war of attrition. Scores from Seanie Ryder and Alan Ryan settled things down, but Knockmore served a warning by coming back with a point. A couple of Darragh Keaveney frees put the margin out to 3, and then a high speculative ball into the small square from the visitors ended up in the back of the net. The scores were level, but then a quick raid downfield and an Alan Ryan point had us in front again. Now kilmeena were in no mood to let this one slip and another free from Darragh Keaveney eased the margin out to two. A quick thinking Nially Duffy free kick inside to Nially Ryan and the veteran made no mistake with his thunderous strike to the back of the neck.

Further scores from Seanie Ryder, Conor Madden, Chris Heanue and Nially Ryan stretched out the margin. A long raking run from Stephen Staunton ended with him finding the top corner of the net. Darragh Keaveney completed the day with another free, and at the final whistle, the result was a comprehensive victory for the men in black and white.

It is very difficult to single out men for special mention on a day when all 19 players used played a huge part in this victory. Andrew Grealis had a fine game in goals making a critical second half save and using his kickout to good effect. The full back line of Staunton, Hastings and Keane were steady throughout. The half back line were imperious with Madden, Feehan, and Heanue all having excellent individual displays. John Ryans link play in defence was excellent. The midfield duo of Sheridan and Duffy showed massive work rate, with Groden and Reilly coming in to pick up and add lots of energy to the sector. The half forward line of Nially Ryan, Seanie Ryder and Joey Smyth displayed excellent skill in tricky conditions and worked so hard off the ball. Keith Joyce and Seanie Barrett worked tirelessly when they came in. Up front Darragh Keaveney and Alan Ryan both led the line with telling effect and caused havoc with their constant movement.

Promotion for this squad is now within reach, and when the story of this season is written, it will be this performance which will demonstrate this team's passion, dedication and sheer will to win.

Kilmeena scorers: Darragh Keaveney 0 - 5(1f), Alan Ryan 1 - 2, Niall Ryan 1 - 1, Joey Smyth 1 - 1(1f), Stephen Staunton 1 - 0, Sean Ryder 0 - 2, Conor Madden 0 - 1, Chris Heanue 0 - 1

Junior Championship Quarter Final Replay

Kilmeena 1 - 8 1 - 13 Ballycastle

Kilmeena and Ballycastle locked horns again at Mchale Pk in this championship replay. Unfortunately this time, the Ballycastle men were to emerge as well deserved winners. Again the game was played with a strong wind, and Kilmeena kicked into it in the first half.

The game started with Kilmeena taking control and dominating possession. They were keeping the ball well, but there was no real penetration up front as Ballycastle defended deep. A lack of patience meant possession being turned over very quickly in a number of attacks and both teams exchanged the first two scores of the game. Kilmeena continued to control the ball, but Ballycastle eased ahead by 4 points with a couple of long distance scores and through free kicks conceded by Kilmeena ill discipline.

Then a couple of scores from Kilmeena brought the margin back to two with five minutes of the half remaining, and it looked like Kilmeena were controlling the game with the advantage of the elements of the second half to come. However, for the next 20 minutes either side of half time Kilmeena did not trouble the umpires flags while Ballycastle were to open up a 10 point gap.

The half ended with 3 Ballycastle points which left the score at Half time

Kilmeena 0 - 3, Ballycastle 0 - 8

Kilmeena needed to start the scond half strong, but within minutes after a defensive lapse Ballycastle scored a fisted goal. This lifted Ballycastle and had the opposite effect on the the Kilmeena lads. Like a boxer on the ropes they came under serious pressure as Ballycastle tagged on another two points. At this stage Ballycastle were fighting for every ball. On a Kilmeena raid on goal 3 Ballycastle payers ended up left on the floor throwing everything into blocks as they successfully cleared the ball.

Going into the final quarter Kilmeena stemmed the flow with a point, and then a speculative lob from Conor Madden ended up in the net. Two further points and Kilmeena were edging back into the game. Ballycastle managed to get upfield for a score, but Kilmeena came roaring back with two further points to leave only a goal in it. However, the comeback was stifled with two Ballycastle attacks ending in points to put the game beyond doubt.

There can be no argument about this defeat. We were beaten by a team who were prepared to throw themselves physically into the game and with more penetration in their attack. The game swung on small margins, but Ballycastle were deserved winners in the end, and it is they who march on to the county semi-final.

Best for Kilmeena: Paddy Keane and John Ryan.
