Kilmeena started brightly, posting three goals (including a well taken penalty by Chris McNally) and a point in the first quarter. Balla struggled in this opening period only making occasional forays into the Kilmeena half, which yielded just a point for the visitors. However, Balla then took the initiative and in a purple patch lasting 10 minutes, they scored 2-2. Both teams exchanged scores in the last 5 minutes of the first half, with Kilmeena raising two further green flags to leave the scoreline 5 -2 to 2 – 4 at the small whistle.
Kilmeena made a solid start to the second half, outscoring Balla by 5 points to nil. In the final quarter, Kilmeena ran the bench and this coincided with a Balla resurgence which yielded 1 – 5 for the visitors – the goal coming from a penalty in the dying moments of the contest.
Despite the final push by the visitors, Kilmeena tacked on 3 further points in the final quarter, including an excellent score from Ronan O’Donnell and a well taken point by Ben Lennon.
Kilmeena were deserved winners, in a match that they controlled for long periods.
