Under 10

Kilmeena U-10's were invited to play in the Grainne Uaile Festival blitz this evening hosted by the Burrishoole Club. Kilmeena played Lahardane first and won by 2 goals and a point. Next up was a ding dong battle with Burrishoole and Kilmeena won by 2 points. Kilmeena and Parke were through to the A final, but it was a step to far for the Kilmeena boys after Cul Camp all week. They battled well but Parke came out on top winning by 4 points. Burrishoole and Lahardane battled it out in the B final which Lahardane won. Thanks to all involved in running the blitz this evening. A great display of talent from all clubs and well done to Parke & Lahardane on winning the cups. Thanks to all our supporters and most of all thanks to our U-10 boys, ye did us proud.

The Kilmeena GAA club annual Paddy Golden memorial blitz took place in St Brendan's Sports Park on Saturday 13 June.

22 boys teams and 6 girls teams competed in A, B and C grade competitions amounting to approximately 300 boys and girls.

As has become the norm at this event the enthusiasm of the children, their parentscoaches and the wider community helped to create a marvellous atmosphere within the grounds. This along with the good weather provided for some very exciting football at all grades.

The boy’s teams competed in section A, B and C competitions, each consisting of two groups.

In section A of the competition, last year’s winners, Breaffy again reached the final where they met theirneighbours Castlebar. This was a very tight game ending in a draw after normal time. After two 5 minute halves of extra time and some excellent football, both teams were still deadlocked.

Following consultation between the management of both teams and the Kilmeena club it was agreed that the fairest result for all was to share the cup. Each club will hold the cup for a six month period.

Section B of the competition saw the home side, Kilmeena take on Achill in what was again a very enjoyable game of football. In the end though, Kilmeena won out with some late scores against a competitive Achill team.

The section C competition also saw the home side, Kilmeena reach the final where they met Westport in a local derby.

While Kilmeena put in a determined effort, it was Westport who went on to secure the C Final title.

The girl’s competition consisted of, teams from Achill, Burrishoole, Louisburgh, Westport and Kilmeena with teams divided into two groups. The final was a fantastic match between Louisburgh and Westport with some fine displays of football from both teams. Like the final of the boys section A competition this game also went to extra time with Westport winning out in the end.

Thanks to all those who gave so generously of their time in helping out with the many jobs and behind the scene activities that go into making the day such a success.

Thanks also to the Golden family for their representation at the blitz.

It is testament to the hard work and commitment that is being put in by managers and mentors of all clubs at this age level when you see the level of skill and love of the game displayed by our young boys and girls who took part in the blitz on Saturday. This can only be a positive for the future of Gaelic games in our county.

On behalf of Kilmeena GAA, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all those clubs who took part in the blitz and hope to see you all compete again next year.

The Paddy Golden blitz takes place this Saturday, 13 June, and we need your help.

Volunteers are needed to assist with setting up the pitches on Friday night and assist with parking on Saturday morning from 9.30am.

More importantly, if anyone would volunteer to take photographs on the day, please let a club officer know before hand.

The annual Paddy Golden Memorial Blitz took place in St Brendan's Sports Park today, Saturday 14 June.

28 teams competed in A, B and C grade competitions for both Under 10 boys and girls.

A marvellous atmosphere was generated by the kids taking part and by the many spectators in attendance. It was a warm day, lovely conditions for football and the pitch was in excellent condition.

The boy’s teams competed in A, B and C competitions, each consisting of two groups and each group very competitive.

In the A grade competition, Breaffy were winners of group 1 and faced the winners of group 2, Westport, in the A Final. A very exciting A final saw Breaffy emerge victorious on a score line of 3-05 to 2-02.

Westport were to prove more successful in the B Final where they faced Castlebar.  Another very competitive game saw Westport secure the B final on a score line of 3-03 to 0-04.

In the C competition, Balla emerged from Group 1 and faced Islandeady, the winners of group 2.  Islandeady went on to secure the C Final title with a score of 3-02 to Balla's 1-05.

The spectators present were witness to some high standard football from all the teams that took part but the finals were especially exciting and enthralling affairs.

Of the Kilmeena teams which took part; in the A grade competition Kilmeena finished second in their group, narrowly missing out on the final. Kilmeena reached the C grade semi-final and the concession of a last minute score cost them a place in the C final.

For the girls, teams from Westport, Achill, Louisburgh, Burrishoole and Kilmeena took part in the blitz. Burrishoole went on to win the girls final with victory over Achill.

This year’s Blitz was probably the best yet and seemed to be enjoyed and appreciated by all who attended and competed. As ever, these events are only successful because of the effort and hard work from all those who gave their time. Many thanks to all who helped set up the pitches, assisted with car-parking, catered the event, made sandwiches, kept scores and refereed. Thanks also to the Golden family for their representation at today’s event.

On behalf of Kilmeena GAA, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who helped make this event a success.
