Two Mayo players were among the NSW ranks. Kilmeena James Ryan lined out at midfield marking Parsons, while Islandeadys Richard Moylette played at wing back. Parsons returns home with the majority of the Irish party this Thursday.

THE THREE WISE MEN Mayo manager John O'Mahony watched the Mayo Junior FC Final in the company of Johnny McGing from Killawalla (left) and Willie Kelly from Kilmeena last Sunday. Pic: Michael Donnelly Day of reckoning for clubs Sean Rice ACHILL saved their best performance of the championship for the final. It was an Achill utterly changed from the indifferent form that had cast them in the role of outsiders. Islandeady had been the form team, and maybe in the end they got caught up in the complacency that the tag of favourites often generates. Yet, nobody watching Achill stagger through the semi-final could have envisaged the spirit and speed they brought to their final tussle on Sunday. They ran like hares, took their scores well, played positively and with a conviction that had not been evident in their previous games. All of them added his piece to the victory. But three men stood out: Colm Cafferkey at centre-half back caused serious damage with his speedy bursts breaching Islandeady’s defensive wall on several occasions; Donal Gallagher for his remarkable work-rate at midfield and Donal Corrigan, a classy and effective wing forward. |

Kilmeena
AFTER a series of near misses, Kilmeena got their Division 1B league ........
campaign up and running in round four on Saturday evening by taking a notable scalp at a sun-drenched St Brendans Park.
A blistering spell either side of half time saw the west Mayo side score three goals including two from second half substitute Joe Ryan which gave them an unassailable 10-point lead. Their hard work and solid team ethic saw them home from there as they marshalled their opponents late comeback impressively.
Shrule/Glencorrib remain bottom of the table without a win after a dreadful start to the season. While they are undoubtedly in considerable relegation trouble at the moment, they clearly have the fire power and class to avoid such a fate. However, they need to find some consistency if they are to marshal a turnaround.
Throughout Saturdays encounter the south Mayo side offered flashes of brilliance and in fact, held a 0-5 to 0-1 lead after the opening quarter. They had Ronan Walsh commanding possession and distributing well at centre half back, flanked by the lively pair of David Geraghty and Kevin Duffy.
Tribute to a Former Clubman
It is with great sadness I write this tribute to mourn the loss of a former club member and to remember the untimely passing and tragic death of Tommy Gibbons on the occurrence of his months mind.
Those who were fortunate enough to have experienced his company in whatever capacity could not be but enamoured by his kindness, always accompanied with a smile, his generosity of spirit and personable good will, such were the trademarks of his life.
The impact that Tommy had upon those who knew him was undeniably proven when the announcement of his death caused people from far and wide to reflect upon the great loss the community, and the world had suffered. None more so than his immediate relatives who will feel the full impact of this tragedy on their lives.
His unassuming nature contributed to the high esteem of his standing within the community. This was characterised by the large attendance of friends and neighbours at his wake in his home on Innislyre, his subsequent removal to St Brendan’s Church Kilmeena, and later at his interment in Myna cemetery. The accompanying photographs supplied, courtesy of Michael McLaughlin, bear testament to this.

Members of the Kilmeena GAA club who would recall his involvement with the club would remember his dedication and commitment while participating in a sport he cherished highly, such was his fondness for all things GAA. An ardent Mayo supporter, he followed their progress closely, attending matches whenever his busy schedule allowed. He would have borne the pain of the team’s recent exit from the championship personally; such was his admiration for the green and red.
We ask you all to remember him and his family in your prayers.
