Mayo GAA Junior Football Championship - Relegation Play-Off.

Kilmeena GAA vs Ballina Stephenites

In our most important game of the season so far, Kilmeena could not find the intensity and performance necessary to secure a vital victory.

Ballina started off the better team and Kilmeena struggled to get hold of the ball in the first half. In tricky showery conditions, Kilmeena could not maintain possession leading to constant pressure on the backline. Not converting from scoring positions was again a factor, including one chance crashing off the Ballina crossbar and almost immediately leading to a Ballina score at the other end of the pitch. Kilmeena went in at half time trailing by 4 points, 0-08 to 0-04.

Needing to up their performance in the second half, Kilmeena were immediately on the back foot after the concession of an early goal. Kilmeena eventually got to the pace of the game as the second half wore on. They created more scoring chances and earned and converted a penalty. As the clock wound down, Kilmeena got back to within two points of Ballina but it was to prove too little too late. The final whistle saw Kilmeena lose by 3 points, Kilmeena 1-10, Ballina 1-13.

Relegation Play-Off Results, Sunday 10 August.

Kilmeena GAA 1-10 Ballina Stephenites 1-13

Knockmore 1-06 Ballintubber 0-12

We have one more chance to maintain our Junior Championship status, we will take on Knockmore. The loser will play Junior B Championship next year!

The 2014 Junior Championship was a campaign of "what might have been" for Kilmeena GAA as successive one point losses leave us facing a relegation play-off rather than challenging for trophies and promotion to a higher level of football.

Despite performing well in our three championship fixtures, the team could not convert their positive displays into victories.

So on Sunday, after a campaign of "must win" games, we face another must win game. Kilmeena will take on Ballina Stephenites in a relegation play off to maintain our Junior status. The team will be pushing hard to get the win needed and, as always, your support could make all the difference.

Please come and shout for your team, who have been playing well and will now be aiming to complete the job and secure victory and our Junior Championship status.
