On behalf of all at Kilmeena G.A.A. Club I wish to sincerely thank our Ladies Club for organising a hugely successful Race Night in the Big Tree Public House on Friday night 20th May. I am acutely aware of the hours and the days that go into getting an event like this organised, and to each one of you, who once again put the shoulder to the wheel and helped get this event over the line, I want to say thanks. The running of this event is a credit to the Ladies Club and was ran off in a most professional manner. I know that many of you spent long hours, in the days leading up to the night, planning and preparing so that there would be no hiccups on the night and it is testament to all of your organisational skills that the night ran so smoothly.
I would like to thank everyone who supported this fundraiser, those who bought horses, sponsored races, donated spot prizes, placed bets on the races, The Big Tree, the bookies, photographer, our neighbours who supported us from Burrishoole, and each and everyone who had any input whatsoever in making this, the magnificent night that it was. I want to say well done to everyone of you for organising and taking on the challenge.
Work on the ground development project will hopefully be starting in the next week, we will have to have a couple more small fundraisers in order to complete the works, but in the end it will be well worth it, and the achievement will be something we all can be justifiably proud of.
Once again, a huge thanks to all involved for the Race Night.
Willie Keaveney. Club Chairman.

Kilmeena hosted Mayo Gaels in this final round game.
Mayo Gaels registered the game’s first score, with a point from open play. Playing against a stiff wind, Kilmeena responded emphatically with goals from Chris McNally, Sean Costello and Robbie Staunton giving a scoreline of 3 goals to one point in Kilmeena’s favour at the quarter hour. Once they overcame Kilmeena’s first fifteen minutes of dominance, Mayo Gaels settled into the game and with a strong wind on their backs, they posted 5 points on the trot. Kilmeena continued to press and their efforts were rewarded with a fourth goal – scored by Chris McNally. Mayo Gaels then replied with a goal at the other end. A point a piece from each team tied up the scoreline at 4 – 1 to 2 - 7 at half time.
Throughout the second half the pendulum swung back and forth; finally resting in Kilmeena’s favour at the big whistle.
It all re-started with Mayo Gaels (now playing into the wind), posting a goal and a point. Kilmeena responded with 4 points from play. Back came the Gaels again with another goal and a point, giving them a 4 point advantage going into the final 5 minutes. A couple of positional changes, coupled with great player determination (a little verbal encouragement from the sideline…….!!) and a will to win, produced a blistering finish from Kilmeena; yielding 2 goals -by Kian Moore – and 3 points (including two great efforts by Chris McGlynn) to swing the contest in Kilmeena’s favour.
Results of the other games in Division 1B means that Kilmeena will just miss out on a semi-final spot.
However, this was as good a finish as we could have asked for.
Well done to all the lads – who can now look forward to the championship

Kilmeena minors did battle against our neighbours Burrishoole in Newport tonight 19th of may. This was a semi final of division 3 and an opportunity to play Bonniconlon in the final.
The first half was a close affair and both teams had opportunities to pull away. But the first half finished with Kilmeena a point ahead 2 - 05 to 2 - 04.
The second half started well for Kilmeena and went a couple of points up. Then all of a sudden Burrishoole bagged 2 fast goals and went 5 points up. Just then Kilmeena hit a purple patch and clawed it back to a single point. At this point it looked like the day could be ours. But it was not to be, as Burrishoole netted 3 further goals and put the game beyond Kilmeena boys.
As you can imagine our lads were extremely disappointed as they had played their hearts out and left it all out on the field. There is no doubt there were so many positives in this performance that it has whet the appetite for future competition.
On behalf of the management and players we would like to thank the supporters that came in great numbers. We hope you enjoyed the game.

Game 1
Kilmeena U-12 boys played their second game of the league away to Aughamore on Monday evening the 16th of May. Kilmeena travelled with a panel of 27 players. Two teams were selected which facilitated all boys getting game time. Both games were played in parallel. The Kilmeena teams were captained by Donal Hastings and Brian Durkan. Both of these lads played the captains role and lead by example throughout their respective games.
Scores in Game 1 came from Matthew Hogan (4), Jack O Grady (2), Conor Feehan, Conor Kelly, Peadar O Toole, Keelan Corcoran & Odhran Tieran (1 each). Good performances were also noted from Dylan Staunton, Sean Gallagher, Louis O Donnell, Jason Monaghan and Stephen O Grady.
Kilmeena 0 - 11 4 - 11 Aughamore
Game 2
This game got off to a slow start for the Kilmeena lads where Aughamore outscored them by 4 points to 1 in the first quarter and 2-01 to 1-03 in the second quarter. Half time score was 1-04 to 2-05 in favour of Aughamore. Tactical switches at midfield with tight marking by the energetic Colin Hastings and influential Brian Durkan brought Kilmeena right back into the game where they held the majority of possession in the 3rd quarter. However, a combination of excellent defence by Aughamore and a run of bad luck for Kilmeena prevented any score difference with 2 points apiece. The momentum that the Kilmeena lads build up in the third quarter continued in the final quarter where Kilmeena outscored Aughamore by 2-04 to 1-01 leaving the final score line of 3-10 to 3-08 in favour of Kilmeena.
Darragh Slattery registered Kilmeena’s first score. Harry Sherdian pulled off some brilliant saves (again) while Adam O Grady and Gavin Mulchrone held solid in defence. Rian Kilcoyne prevented definite scores from crucial blocks and turnovers. Daniel Kelly was unselfish upfront with key assists for scores from Ciaran Kilcoyne (G) Conal Gill (G &1) Liam Moore (2), Darragh Slattery (3), Jack Mulchrone (2), Rian Kilcoyne (1), Evan O Donnell (1) and Lorcan Coady (G).
Well done to Aughamore for a good sporting game and thanks to those who travelled to support these great young fellas from Kilmeena. Also, special thanks to Cian O Brien for his assistance with the stats from the game.
Kilmeena 3 - 10 3 - 08 Aughamore

Islandeady travelled to Kilmeena for this season’s under-8 opener on a glorious Saturday morning.
We split into two teams, Team 1 mostly consisted of the older players and Team 2 mostly of the younger lads.
Team 1: Kilmeena put away their early chances before Islandeady settled into the game and drew level before half time.
In the second half Islandeady started the stronger and took most chances that came their way but due to some heroic defending
by the home team, the deficit might have been greater. Kilmeena came back into the game and scored a few chances of their own,
despite resolute defensive work by the visitors. Both opposing teams were happy with their days work at the final whistle.
Team 2: It was a big day for these lads, for most, it was their first time to pull on the Jersey and line out for Kilmeena. Everybody quickly got into the game and there was great improvement to be seen in skill levels.
We had an even match up up with Islandeady throughout the game and amazingly it ended in a draw !
All in all, these hotly-contested games were a fantastic start to the season and a great indicator of things to come from the young guns.
Thanks to parents for great positive support throughout !
