Kilmeena G.A.A. extends heartiest congratulations to Julie Moore on her recent graduation from the Milltown Institute in Dublin where she obtained, with Distinction, a “BSc in Applied Health Science and Physical Therapy”.
The course was a level 7 QQI approved BSc run by a private college – The Institute of Physical Therapy and Applied Science (IIPTAS). A 3-year course, that included a weekly clinical placement in Dublin throughout the 3rd year, plus a number of written and practical exams across all three years.
When asked about her future plans, Julie said, “Regarding the future, I have set up a business - Body Balance Physical Therapy (feel free to like my page on Facebook). Currently, I am operating from my home clinic in Carrowholly, and from the Westport Leisure Park, although, ultimately I would love to have own premises in Westport.
In addition to working with sports people, her work covers the whole spectrum of musculoskeletal conditions including back, neck and shoulder pain, hip and knee conditions, sciatica, whiplash and rehabilitation following fracture/surgery. “There is no better job satisfaction than working with someone of advancing years who has reduced mobility/function and being able to help them regain better movement, reduction in pain and improved quality of life”!
Julie has given sterling service to the Club over the last number of years, acting as the pitch-side Physio to various Kilmeena teams: “My work with Kilmeena G.A.A. as the Physical club Therapist includes, providing pitch side assistance on match days for the senior team and occasionally Minors and Under 21’s for bigger fixtures. I also carry out all the necessary assessments and treatment of injuries to the players. Keeping this in-house has, I understand worked out well for the club. I am pleased to say that most players have had minimal "down-time" this year. Quick assessment and treatment, plus liaison with Managers is key to this success. The Managers have also involved me in many strength and conditioning sessions throughout the season. This has allowed me to influence some areas of training and focus on reducing injuries due to poor technique etc. I have loved working with Kilmeena, my local club this year, and looking forward to doing so again in 2016.”
Julie’s dedicated application to her course of studies was recognized by the College in awarding her the prestigious “Student of the year Award.” She received a Cup from the College in recognition of this achievement.
On Friday 20th November, the underage boys and girls from the Kilmeena parish were honoured at our annual presentation night held in The Mill Times Hotel.
John McDonald, Chairman of Kilmeena Bord na nÓg welcomed all the young players and their families. Our special guest Kevin McLoughlin from the Mayo Senior team presented the awards. The Mayo Minor Captain, Shauna Howley alongside her teammate and local Kilmeena girl, Fiona Groden also helped with the presentations on the evening.
The following teams were successful in competitions held throughout the year:
Under 12 Girls: Won the under 12 blitz in the Neale. This was a great achievement for this bunch of players as it’s the first time since the formation of the Ladies club to see silverware at this level. This trophy reflects on the hard work and determination from the girls and the commitment from the managers and mentors Ollie Mulchrone, Colm Barrett, Mary Mulachy, Geraldine Gibbons and Ann Hastings.
Under 10 Boys: Under the management of Pat Mulchrone, Damian Hughes, Mike Slattery, Dermot Tiernan and Ann Hastings, this group of 32 boys won two cups in Burrishroole, The Tourmakeady cup and The Paddy Golden Shield. These lads are definitely a panel to watch. All year they displayed strong football and good sportsmanship. They present great potential for the future.

After the awards Kevin McLoughlin spoke about the importance of developing your ball skill and how prospering this skill is essential to improve as a footballer. ‘You need to have the football in your hand all the time, that’s how you’re going to become a good footballer’.
Club Chairmen, Willie Keaveney and John McDonald thanked all the sponsors and all the members and their families who attended the presentation evening. Willie urges more people to get involved in the running of the club, in particular the ladies. Without volunteers the club will cease to exist. It’s necessary for you, the parents or older siblings to take the initiative to help out in any way you can. There will be a ladies football meeting this Wednesday 25th of November at 8:30pm in the clubhouse. It is essential that people attend and are willing to volunteer their time: ‘Volunteers are not paid – not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless’.
On a different note (pardon the pun), Kilmeena GAA and the Kilmeena parish would like to wish John Ryan Jr, Róisín Hogan, Muireann Cawley and Ben Lennon the best of luck in Scór na nÓg.
