St Brendan's National School Kilmeena welcomed members of the Defence Forces to the school last Thursday. This was in conjunction with the Government's plan to deliver a National Flag and a copy of the 1916 Proclamation to every Primary School in the country, as outlined in the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme. It was a special day indeed with poetry, singing, instrumental music and an address by the members of the Defence Forces. A large crowd attended the celebration and the principal Michael Carney thanked everyone for their support. It was a day to remember and the children really enjoyed the day. Rian Kilcoyne accepted a copy of the Proclamation on behalf of every child in the school and Jack and Stephen O'Grady accepted the National Flag.

Why undergo a Cardiac Screening?
• Up to 100 young people die each year in Ireland from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS)
• 1 in 300 people may have a cardiac abnormality
• The national register recently reported that the incidents of SADS are higher in Ireland than many other European countries.
• In Italy cardiac screening is mandatory for anyone aged 12 to 35 years involved in competitive sport for the past 25 years. They have reduced the incidents of SADS by 89%.
• The GAA’s Medical Scientific and Welfare Committee and the International Rugby Board recommend cardiac screening for all players over the age of 14 years
• The European Society of Cardiology & the International Olympic Committee recommends cardiac screening.
Last night in McHale Park kilmeena minors had a historic win in the minor county championship. At 8.30pm on the 16th of October under lights, the ball was thrown in. It was a night of perfect conditions for football. The only thing that wasn't picked up on was the clash of Jersey's. The game was on.
Kilmeena came out of the blocks fast and got the first score on the board. Our early dominance did not show on the board as we kicked 7 wides. Ballaghaderreen came into the game and picked off 4 points to leave the score 4 points to 2 after 20 minutes. Keith Joyce came off the bench and scored a goal. It was needed as we were struggling at this time and turning over a lot of ball. Ballaghdeeren leveled soon after and the half time whistle went. Kilmeena went to the dressing room leaving their fans wondering if they had they anything left in the tank. After some harsh words and banging of tables, kilmeena lads came out and delivered.
It was a magnificent performance from a very special bunch of guys. This win was not down to any one player but a total team performance.
Kilmeena won 2.07 to Ballaghaderreen 0.08
I believe this is the first time our proud club has won this competition. Thank you, to all involved that helped to make this possible.
Onwards and upwards.
